What is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome PCOS?
Polycystic ovarian syndrome is characterized by the existence of multiple cysts in one or both ovaries.
These cysts release hormones that disrupt the hormonal balance in the body, and may cause symptoms such as male-pattern hair growth (on chin, breasts, and naval), acne, loss of scalp hair, lack of menstruation , lack of ovulation, and infertility.
PCOS sufferers are at greater risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes and heart disease. It is essential that you manage your eating accordingly to avoid these complications.
Weight gain, obesity and PCOS -
Insulin Resistance is the culprit!
It reduces the processing of glucose through the cell wall for conversion to energy. This results in glucose accumulating in the blood stream, causing elevated levels of blood sugar. The sugar is taken to the liver and converted into fat and stored via the blood stream throughout the body. This process can lead to weight gain and obesity. Correct eating habits will help you to manage your weight, boost your metabolism, improve your energy and live a healthier life.
Hormones, Infertility and PCOS -
High insulin levels contribute to an elevation in male hormones in the body. PCOS sufferers ovaries produce an excess amount of the male hormones testosterone and androstenedione resulting in high testosterone levels in the blood.
PCOS with high testosterone can cause increased hair growth and acne. Women with polycystic ovaries and infertility do not ovulate regularly. Once again dietary management can greatly assist here.
The use of herbal medicines and nutritional supplementation has been shown to be effective in the reduction of PCOS complications. Weight loss results in significant improvement in pregnancy and ovulation rates in anovulatory obese women.
